Using a timber treatment on untreated timber provides long-term resistance to organisms that cause deterioration. If timber treatments are applied correctly, they can extend the productive life of the timber by five to ten times. If left untreated, wood that is exposed to moisture or soil for sustained periods of time will become weakened by various types of wood rotting fungi, bacteria or wood boring insects. There are three main types of timber treatment:
Insecticide: also known as a pesticide, a timber treatment designed specifically to treat or protect against attack from wood boring insects.
Fungicide: a timber treatment designed specifically to treat or protect timber against wood rotting fungi and bacteria.
Dual purpose or universal: a broad spectrum timber treatment designed to treat or protect timber against various types of wood rotting fungi, bacteria and wood boring insects.
Timber treatments come in different forms, these range from concentrated liquids which are available either in plastic containers or water soluble sachets, to ready to use liquids, gels or pastes.
