Condensation is generally only noticeable where it forms on non-absorbent surfaces (i.e. windows or tiles) and for house holders this can be an everyday nuisance, cleaning/drying water from window sills and from the glass itself. Often this condensation may be a sign of a more serious problem that often gets over looked, as condensation can occur on many different surfaces it is highly likely that as well as the condensation on the windows it is also building up on more inconspicuous areas that only become apparent when mould growth or rotting of materials form. This mould growth or rotting of materials may not be in the same room as the condensation that is first noticed because usually in certain areas of a house (such as bathrooms and kitchens) the warm air contains a lot of moisture, if that air then spreads to cooler parts of the house, it will condense on any cold surface.
Once signs of condensation become apparent it is essential that condensation control measures are implemented to reduce the chance of further damage and mould outbreaks. Condensation control should be used either locally at the point where condensation is prevalent (in minor cases) or in more severe instances whole house condensation control methods should be implemented to combat condensation throughout a property.
Condensation control is particularly important when there is black mould present as it can present a health hazard to humans, potentially causing allergic reactions and when present in large quantities, other types of respiratory problems. Mould allergies have always been a serious problem for many people. It is also important to remember that like all other types of fungus, there are some people who may be more sensitive to the effects of black mould. People who have allergies, respiratory disease or any type of immune suppressing disease should be especially wary of this toxic mould.
When using condensation control to combat mould it is important to make sure that you treat all areas with a fungicide (multicide), designed to firstly eradicate the mould, then to stop further growth of the spores once the condensation problem has been stopped.
